Dog TV - Cool Idea, But It's Bound To Get Buried

I just caught wind of a new TV network called Dog TV, from DirecTV.  And no, it's not a channel about dogs, but rather, a channel, they say, aimed at dogs themselves.

Meaning, dogs are the target audience.

The network programming plans include

"3- to 6-minute video clips in three categories: relaxation, stimulation and 'exposure,' which center on segments designed to habituate dogs to domestic stimuli."

The idea behind the network is to create content for stay-at-home dogs.  Seriously, how many of us leave the TV or stereo on for the dogs when we leave them at home?  (I'm raising my hand...)

The new network says this kind of programming is designed to keep dogs from trashing on couches, magazines and other chewable destructibles.  (Though I'd be worried about the TV itself!)

The concept seems interesting, and I'm betting, it won't last long.

The folks behind the idea say studies show that dogs so show some interest in what's on the TV.  And I agree.  Some... not a lot.  But some.

But with dogs, there's no advertising demographic that any advertiser might pay for.  But then the catch, which I think will doom it for sure, is that after it launches on DirecTV on August first, the first two weeks are free, and then it will cost $4.99 per month.

Yep... as if the idea wasn't doomed enough, $5 a month should seal its fate.  Though some suggest that the ratings will still be The CW!

It is rather cute and serene... (Wait... what's a stingray got to do with dog relaxation!?)  I give it a few months at best.  After that, I'd be shocked.
